ITEM: Here is
Color Cubes
, with a small torn envelope corner with printing:
"BAILEY...
580 MASSACHU...
CAM..."
Except for a nail writer, this has to be the smallest magic effect put out. This is a common item sold by many magic dealers, circa 1900. Bottom of the attached photos is from the Martinka Catalog, circa 1900. Two small wooden cubes, 5/16 inches on all sides. Faces of cubes are colored red, white, yellow, blue, black and green. You would hold the pair in your fingers, and by turning them to show opposite sides, you could show the colors on the opposite sides to change to different colors. The instructions are not here. We had a set years ago from C. Milton Chase. They had hand colored squares to show how to make the changes, when twisting the cubes.
From Magicpedia, courtesy of Genii Magazine:
Bailey and Tripp
was a magic shop started by
S. Willson Bailey
(1875-1935) and
Charles K. Tripp
(c.1876-1939) in
1896.
Three months after the store was opened, Bailey bought out Tripp's interest in the establishment, but Tripp continued to turn out apparatus and illusions for him. Upon Tripp's death, it was continued as the
S. Willson Bailey Company
.
The store was moved from Boston to across the river in Cambridgeport, where Bailey also added a workshop. About the year 1912, he moved one last time to Cambridge.
His shop was eventually bought by
Frank Ducrot
.
